How Many Kids Have to Die?

A friend of mine just posted on Facebook a report of yet another Gay teenager who committed suicide after years of being bullied and brutalized by his classmates.  That makes three reports in the past three days.  I am beginning to feel like it is open season on LGBTs these days, and no one appears to be listening to the cries of our most vulnerable.

While Rick “Frothy Mix” Santorum and the rest of his insane and stupid bigoted buddies on the so-called “Christian Right” (which is neither) are falling all over themselves trying to use the LGBT community as the great wedge issue of the upcoming Presidential election, telling outrageous lies and actually getting standing ovations from the criminally stupid people who believe the shit they spew, our kids are subject to direct attacks, both verbal and physical, by their classmates.  Every.  Day.

Some forty years ago, I was one of these kids.  Children are not stupid, and they have instincts; kids can smell the “different” kid in their midst like a rat smelling cheese and then zero in on him/her like a hunter with a rifle posed to shoot to kill.  In fact, when I was in junior high school, the brutality got so bad that I had a nervous breakdown and it took a year of psychiatric counseling to get me to be able to walk into a school building without getting physically ill.

Yet as bad as it was back then, we are talking forty years ago.  There were no cell phones, no personal computers, no Facebook; in short, no way for the bullying to follow me home.  Home was safe.

This is no longer true for these children.  They spend their whole day at school enduring unrelenting torment from their peers, an unconscionable situation that most school administrators are simply too lazy to deal with.  If I had a nickel for every time one of these officials claimed they had no idea that bullying was taking place, I could have retired years ago to a nice condo in Key West Florida and be spending my life sitting by the pool and sipping frozen drinks served by a scantily-clad cabaña boy.

And it does not end when they leave school.  They come home, they go on their computers, and there the bullies are, posting all sorts of horrible things on the various social networks with little fear of repercussion:  I am a member of Facebook myself and I have been called a “faggot” by more people than I can count, but reporting them has never done one bit of good.  Fortunately, Facebook has a Block feature, but kids are not as hardened as we are; they can block their tormentors, sure, but they can’t undo the damage; you can’t unring that bell no matter how hard you try.

As the presidential race heats up, the Republicans are out in full force trying to outdo one another in demonizing the LGBT community with hate speech, innuendo, and out-and-out vicious lies.  So if I may go out on a limb and suggest that the bullies come from Republican homes (all too often of the “Christian Right” variety), this means that they are getting tacit permission, if not outright approval, for the hateful things they say and do.  And no one seems to be terribly interested in stopping them; “kids will be kids” and “he has to learn to take it” are phrases heard all too often by these kids whose souls are crying out for love and protection.

If I had the means, I would snatch every one of these kids from their miserable excuses for parents, watch their school like a hawk for any sign of abuse, and make sure that they knew every day that they were loved and accepted, not just by me, but by God, just the way they are.

How many of these precious children have to die before this country decides to wake up and smell the coffee??
